God and His Messenger Are Not Arbitrary

Allah is not arbitrary in His decrees and in His decisions.

“If We had desired to have some amusement, We would have derived it from Our Presence, but We did not do that. Rather We hurl the truth against falsehood and it cuts right through it and it vanishes clean away! Woe without end for you for what you portray!” Qur’an, 21: 17-18

“There is no one in the heavens and earth who will not come to the All-Merciful as a slave. He has counted them and numbered them precisely.” Qur’an, 19: 93-94

“You have an excellent model in the Messenger of Allah, for all who put their hope in Allah and the Last Day and remember Allah much.” Qur’an, 33: 21.

We easily testify belief in God but we often attempt to worship God through individual means.

Some say, “Eliminate the Sunnah – just the Qur’an”.

Worshipping God via our individually stylized reason and personal whims.

“Say: ‘Obey God and the Messenger.’ Yet if they should turn away, then know that God does not love disbelievers.” Qur’an, 3: 32.

What is the role of prophethood in general and the Prophet Muhammad in specific?

Prophethood in General

Prophethood/prophecy (not the same as predicting the future) is to convey to us Who God Is (and isn’t); what God wants from us; what is the nature of reality beyond what we can sense-perceive.

Without Prophethood we would be deaf, dumb and blind.

“Those who reject Our signs are deaf and dumb, in darkness. God lets anyone He wishes go astray, while He sets anyone He wishes upon a Straight Road.” Qur’an, 6: 39

Without Prophethood we would be deaf, dumb and blind.

“Those who disbelieve may be compared to those who bleat away at something that only listens to calls and cries: deaf, dumb and blind, they do not use their reason.” Qur’an, 2: 171

The Signs of God are the beginnings of understanding God and the Prophets are the deliverers and gateways to that beginning. We cannot get there on our own.

“How can you disbelieve while God’s verses are being recited to you and His messenger is among you? Anyone who clings to God will be guided to a Straight Road.” Qur’an, 3: 101

God challengers believers and non-believers alike. The Messenger has been placed amongst us – we have his Sunnah – and we have the Book of Allah to convey the Truth to us.

The Prophet makes clear and plain:

  • Who God Is.
  • What God wants from us and how to go about doing it.
  • What is the nature of reality beyond what we can sense-perceive.

The Prophet makes God accessible for us by demonstrating through lifestyle, how one worships God.

“Every Prophet has a prayer (du’ah), that if he makes it, it will be answered. My prayer is for the intercession of my Community (ummah) on the Day of Judgment.”

Anas Bin Malik, al-Bukhari #3007
