Religion Is Sound And Sincere Advice

“Everything in the heavens and everything in the earth glorifies God. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. You who of faith!, why do you say what you do not do? It is deeply abhorrent to God that you should say what you do not do. God loves those who fight in His Way in ranks like well-built walls.” Qur’an, 61: 1-4

A group of us Companions of the Messenger of Allah sat talking, and we said: “If we knew which deed was most beloved to Alllah then we would do it.” So Allah, Most High, revealed: ‘Everything in the heavens and everything in the earth glorifies God. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. You who of faith!, why do you say what you do not do?’ Abdullah bin Salam said, ‘So the Messenger of Allah recited it to us’.” al-Tirmidhi, #3309

Tamim al-Dari, may God be pleased with him, related that the Prophet said, “al-Din is al-Nasihah [repeated three times].” “In regards to whom O’ Messenger of God?” “To God, to His Book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Believers and the rank-and-file as well as the leaders of the Muslims and the rank-and-file.” Sunan Abu Dawud, #4944

What’s the meaning of nasihah?

  • Sincerity.
  • Frankness.

Ibn Mandhur in his work, Lisan al-‘Arab, says that nasihah/advice (nasaha) is akin to khulus/sincerity (khalasa).

What’s the point of all this?

How can Islam have any effect on our lives when, instead of us being reformed by it, we’re too busy to listen to it and be informed by it?

al-Khattabi says, regarding nasihah/advice,

“Its meaning, as it relates to God, is conviction in God’s oneness and sincerity in intentions of worship”.

Lastly, the advice from the Prophet is,

“A person is one religion of their confidant – therefore let each of you consider who he takes for his confidant.” Sunan Abu Dawud, #4833
