Taking Ownership Of Our Islam

One of the challenges of this generation is the deluge of narrative stories. So inundated are we with stories it’s almost as if we are overmedicated by them. Stories are a wonderful thing but it’s also important for you to have your own story. In fact it is your own story that allows you to relate late to others: The more powerful your own story is the stronger you will relate to other stories. But most importantly you must have a story. And in order to do so you must get off the couch, turn off the television and step away from the phone so you may actually write your story.

The following verses and hadith are just a few examples in the way in which many Muslims negatively interpret the Qur’an to discourage other Muslims from seeing agency in the lives they live:

“You who have iman! do not take the Jews and Christians as your friends; they are the friends of one another. Any of you who takes them as friends is one of them. Allah does not guide wrongdoing people.” Qur’an, 5:51

“You who have iman! do not take the kafirun as friends rather than the muminun. Do you want to give Allah clear proof against you?” Qur’an, 4: 144

“He who imitates any people (in their actions) is considered to be one of them.” Hadith
