الحمد لله المفيض الخيرات والوهاب البركات وصلى وسلم وبارك على سيد المرسلين وعلى آله وصحبه وبعد

We continue with my translation of Dr. Aḥmad Muḥammad Jād Allāh’s (د. أحمد محمد جاد الله), The Fundamentals of Qālūn from the Shāṭibiyyah Method – Question and Answer (أُصُولُ رِوَايَةِ قَالُونْ مِن طَرِيقِ الشَّاطِبِيَّة – سُؤَالٌ وَجَوَابٌ), may Allāh preserve him.

The Rules of Qālūn – Question & Answer

Question Number Two: What is the ruling on seeking refuge in Allāh (ta’awwudh/التعوّذ) and when should it be recited silently?

Answer: Scholars agree that seeking refuge is recommended before reciting (the Qur’ān) based on Allāh’s saying: “When you recite the Qur’ān, seek refuge with Allāh from Satan, the accursed.” [Qur’ān 16:98]. However, they differed on whether the command in the verse is for recommendation or obligation. The majority of scholars and experts in recitation say it is recommended (mandūb), so if the reciter omits it, they are not sinful. Some, however, consider it obligatory.

It is recommended to recite it silently in the following situations:

  • If the reciter is reading silently, whether alone or in a gathering.
  • If he is alone, whether reciting silently or aloud.
  • If he is in prayer, whether the prayer is silent or aloud.
  • If he is reading with a group and is not the one starting the recitation.

Except in these situations, it is recommended to recite it aloud.

If you missed it, you can review Question One. We’ll be posting Question Number Three shortly, in shā’ Allāh.
