الحمد لله المفيض الخيرات والوهاب البركات وصلى وسلم وبارك على سيد المرسلين وعلى آله وصحبه وبعد

We continue with my translation of Dr. Aḥmad Muḥammad Jād Allāh’s (د. أحمد محمد جاد الله), The Fundamentals of Qālūn from the Shāṭibiyyah Method – Question and Answer (أُصُولُ رِوَايَةِ قَالُونْ مِن طَرِيقِ الشَّاطِبِيَّة – سُؤَالٌ وَجَوَابٌ), may Allāh preserve him.

The Rules of Qālūn – Question & Answer

Question Number Four: What are the permissible options specifically related to connecting Sūrah al-Anfāl and Sūrah al-Tawbah, and when seeking refuge (taʿawwudh) and reciting the Basmalah (saying bismillah)?

Answer: The permissible options between Sūrah al-Anfāl and Sūrah al-Tawbah are three:

  • Stopping (الوقف/al-waqf): This is to pause the voice at the last word of the verse for a time in which one usually takes a breath, with the intention of resuming the recitation.
  • The Silent Pause (السكت/al-sakt): This is to pause the voice at the last letter of the verse for a time in which one usually does not take a breath, with the intention of resuming the recitation.
  • Connecting (الوصل/al-waṣl): This is to connect the end of al-Anfāl with the beginning of al-Tawbah without a pause.

The permissible options when seeking refuge (taʿawwudh) and reciting the Basmalah (saying bismillah) are four:

  • Complete Cutting (قطع الجميع/qaṭʿ al-jamīʿ): That is, separating the seeking of refuge (taʿawwudh) from the Basmalah, and the Basmalah from the beginning of the recitation of the following Sūrah.
  • Cutting the first from the second and connecting the second with the third (قَطْعُ الأَوَّلِ عَنِ الثَّانِي، وَوَصْلُ الثَّانِي بِالثَّالِثِ/).
    • You say the taʿawwudh (أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم) and then you pause/stop (Cutting the first from the second).
    • Then you would then recite the Basmalah (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) (connecting the second with the third).
    • Then, without pausing, you continue/connect directly into the Sūrah.
  • Connecting the first with the second and cutting the second from the third.
  • Connecting all.

These four options are permissible when starting with any verse of a Sūrah except for the first verse of Surah Sūrah al-Tawbah. When beginning with Sūrah al-Tawbah, only two options are permissible:

  • Stopping after seeking refuge (taʿawwudh).
  • Connecting the seeking of refuge (taʿawwudh) with the first verse of the Sūrah.

If you missed it, you can review Question Three. We’ll be posting Question Number Five shortly, in shā’ Allāh.
